10 Safety Tips

Staying safe in today’s world almost sounds like a joke. It seems that everywhere we go and everything we hear is about the crime and violence in the world.

Have you ever felt vulnerable? Have you ever been a victim of a crime?

Here are a few safety tips for you to consider to help you stay safe at home, at school, at work, or on the go:

  • Always use the “buddy system“! A “buddy system” is a type of safety management practice in which individuals are paired or teamed up and given responsibility for ensuring each other’s safety (https://www.safeopedia.com/definition/6169/buddy-system).
  • Be confident! Walk with confidence… shoulders back, head held high, chin parallel to the floor.
  • If someone is following you when you’re driving, drive to the nearest police station.
  • Don’t follow the same routine. Take a different route to school, work, or wherever you go.
  • Stay alert! Be aware of your surroundings. Be aware of those around you. Be aware of cars in parking lots or on the streets.
  • Carry keys in your hand when walking. You can place your keys between your fingers and use them to ward off an attacker or use the panic button to alert others you may be in a dangerous situation.
  • At night, place your keys on your nightstand. Keys can be used as a security system. Use the panic button to set off the car horn.
  • Never get into a stranger’s vehicle!
  • Don’t be afraid to defend yourself! Fight back!
  • Take self-defense classes. Find a local school or business which offers these classes. If the class costs money and you feel like you can’t afford to pay the fees, do it anyway. It’s worth it in the long run.

These are just a few simple ways to help you stay safe. There are many more ways available to us and our loved ones.
